Artist Xin Cheng discusses her new work Propositions 2013, part of Freedom Farmers: New Zealand Artists Growing Ideas, on at Auckland Art Gallery from 26 October 2013 -- 23 February 2014.
"My practice is a mixture of studio based and field based practice because I find inspiration from everyday people, kind of improvising...and finding ways of living that are close to the land" --- Cheng
Notes:
- I am interested in how the work was conceived through "a conversation" with a gallery supervisor/manager as well as the space that was assigned to Cheng. Space influences the visualising/making of the work and its structure. Inspired by a project by someone else ("an American guy"), where a playground was created out of waste materials such as tires etc.
- Ideas for making merge from different encounters, which come together in her work -- how the materials come together in the space to work in a sculptural way.
- These ideas intersect with my own interests: how my projects can operate within as well as outside of the gallery space, and how they become a part of the space they are situated in - whether indoors or outdoors. How ideas crop up from another work/ someone else project/ making a community activity into art by learning and using their methods of making or improvising.
