Lens-based group show of Whitecliffe post-grad students as part of the Auckland Photography Festival in Form Gallery.

Title: Bedroom Journeys

Duration: 1 hr 2 mins

Statement:

Aotearoa’s satellite-captured terrain is explored from my bedroom via my laptop. Various digital hindrances become overlaid onto the landscape; glitches, loading data, missing data, lagging and distortion become transient parts of the topography as I scroll through the terrain. Consequences of Covid lockdowns are echoed through the curb of physical travel, where encounters of the outside world shift to online alternatives.

A record of different spaces, times and images mediate the functionality as well as the floundering and failure of such technology. Notions of Aotearoa’s impeccable, pristine landscape are challenged through a repurposed but common digital tool. Modern technology’s claim of precise and consistent performance becomes questioned, alongside our reliance on such devices to recognise and locate our ways in the world.
