'Animal Book Project 2 '

May 2019

Performance Version.

Duration: 20 mins.

Location: Parnell.

Strapped to my chest with bailing twine I had found around my garden, the thick book, 'Untamed,' by Steve Bloom was hanging heavily on my shoulders. I had also inserted sponge offcuts between the book, bailing twine and my shoulders to stop it from causing damage. I had a recording of cicada chirping in my phone in my right jeans pocket, and wore gumboots. Taking my audience on a 20 minute walk along the rose gardens, we paused for 20 seconds at certain spots along the way. I opened a page of a picture of an animal or a bird in response to the location we were situated at.

This performance was an extension of 'Animal Book Project 1'. I was interested in the idea of locations, and how they can affect the viewer’s perceptions of the image being viewed. The book was transferred from my garden deck (where it was originally situated in the first video) to my own body, I then proceeded to utilise my body as a ‘location,’ bringing in elements from the video such as the cicada noises and items with rural or ‘farm’ associations. The viewers were requested to follow me to and through certain, pre-chosen locations, and to veiw the images in relation to the current environment that we were within at the time.
